My name is Bram Meulenbeld. This website was primarily meant to be an open forum about sustainability related issues but I sort of developed it more and more into my own personal website. I might as well than tell something about myself. I should clearly explain that for me the term 'sustainability' is both social and ecological related, since social and ecological problems are so interconnected that you can't see them separately.
Because of my interest and experience I mainly write from an economical and financial perspective. Having studied economics and later on working for a Credit Insurance company and having day-traded S&P-500 futures, I learned a lot about the tremendous (often negative) impact the financial/monetary world has on our economy and therefor on our society as a whole but just as important on our ecosystems;
Interest, property rights, derivatives, fractional banking, pricing, cost allocation, etc. have had a tremendous effect on our current world as I try to describe in my blogs but which is also written in beautiful books, websites, videos. These are also subject to my favorite projects: Thinking about the meaning of value, alternative currencies, alternative banking, etc. In other projects I am involved in, like setting up a political manifest and my involvement in platforms/think-thanks, I am often called upon because of my thoughts and knowledge in these matters.
However, because I am very holistic (whereby the term 'holistic' I refer to the ability and wish to think overlaping, non-Cartesian, three-dimensional, circular), I always try to learn as much as possible from all kinds of subjects: history, geography, biology, cultural anthropology, art, physics, etcetera; mostly through philosophy, I have an opinion about a lot of matters outside of the financial-economical world as well.
As you can read, and especially in my blogs, I am critical. Partly because of my very strong rational conditioning and probably because my ego sometimes still gets in the way, but mainly meant to give people a different look on things. Things aren't as straight-forward as we have thought for a long time, but a lot of people, for various reasons, still think that they are.
To live up to what I say and am critical about, I try to lower my footprint as much as possible. Since this is for me, until now, the best way to express the piece of pie you take from the piece of pie you are entitled to. It's not perfect, and in my view still doesn't rule out a lot of social problems that it needs to solve to become pragmatic, but this really is something worth studying/examining much further.
Besides that I actively take part in local initiatives like supporting projects in the area of sustainable food-production and sustainable building. Along a strong interest in economics and finance, I also have a strong interest in food. We try to grow as much of our own food as possible, but I also like preparing, conserving and cooking them.
I also have a strong interest in sustainable building. Especially recycling of materials can simply be beautiful. From re-polishing to restoration and even rebuilding and recreating. I am therefor a strong supporter of this website
Finally I am involved in the ardvanderlinden project. A great art project that discusses unity and identity through various forms of art and expression.
